Fisher enters U.S. Senate race

State Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher, who last month was fined in municipal court and received probation on a charge of drunken driving, will run for the U.S. Senate, he said Thursday.
"I called (U.S. Rep.) Brad Carson as a courtesy call, visited with him and told him I was in the race," Fisher said. "You don't run across this opportunity often."

Carson, D-Claremore, announced earlier as a candidate for the seat being vacated by Sen. Don Nickles, R- Ponca City, who doesn't plan to run for re-election next year.

Fisher said he didn't think his municipal court case would be a factor in his campaign.

He said he has apologized to the people of Oklahoma.

"I think they are more concerned with what I have accomplished in the position to which I have been elected. Many people have said to me, 'There but for the grace of God go I,'" Fisher said. "The people who feel they wouldn't have voted for me because I had three beers probably wouldn't have voted for me."

Fisher, 63, is in his second term as state insurance commissioner.

He said he has a tremendous amount of work to do over the next two or three weeks to file the proper forms to be a candidate.

"I have done everything to demonstrate I have integrity. My feeling is because you have made a bad mistake doesn't make you a bad person," Fisher said. "I will live on my track record of accomplishments of what we have done for people and the industry."

Fisher, a Democrat from Tulsa, pleaded no contest to the municipal charge of driving under the influence. He paid $1,186 in fines and other costs and will spend six months on supervised probation.

He was arrested Aug. 3 in northwest Oklahoma City after a teenager reported following a driver who was swerving and going off the road.

Fisher was in his state car.

He also pleaded no contest last month in municipal court to making an illegal right turn and transporting an open container of beer.

Former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys, a Republican, also is running for the U.S. Senate seat, as is Jim Rogers, a Democrat from Midwest City.

State insurance chief plans run for Senate

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- State Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher, who was recently given a six-month probationary sentence for a drunken-driving conviction, said Thursday that he plans to run for the U.S. Senate next year.

Fisher told Oklahoma City radio station KTOK that he talked to people around the state and decided to seek the Democratic nomination for the Senate post being vacated by Republican Don Nickles.

Besides his DUI conviction, Fisher has had other troubles since he was re-elected in 2002.

The 63-year-old official has been reprimanded by the Oklahoma Ethics Commission for causing an insurance company to look into the personnel file of a political opponent.

He came under fire for accepting furniture on behalf of the state for his office, including a $4,399 desk that Gov. Brad Henry said would be improper to keep.

He also was criticized for distributing "I'm a Friend of Carroll Fisher" stickers to chiropractors, who were to attach them to insurance claims.

Rep. Brad Carson of the 2nd Congressional District already has served notice that he intends to run for the Senate.

Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys is a Republican candidate for the post.

So we have a drunk with 2 DUI's with a history of getting loud at party events running for the US Senate. The other guy is a DINO.

Fisher is about to get a lesson in dirty campaign tricks. Mike Carrier and Brad Luna are already writing the press release's about Fisher not making it to his court ordered AA meetings.

Carroll Fisher, sitting on the edge of his bed, empty whisky bottles littering the floor. There with his throbbing head in his hands he mumbles, "I did what?"

That's the first time I ever thought, a drunk is better than a DINO.
